Liverpool legend Ray Clemence urges Reds to spend big to catch Manchester City

Liverpool legend Ray Clemence has said that the Reds must spend big during this summer’s transfer window in order to compete with Manchester City for the Premier League crown. The Reds failed to win their maiden Premier League title last term by the margin of just one point but they still ended the season on a high note by winning the Champions League title.

Speaking to The Mirror, Clemence said that the Reds must keep getting better to compete with the Citizens and they should make a few notable signings this summer, he told: “The thing is – and Liverpool and Klopp will know this better than anyone – you’ve got to keep trying to get better. What they did last year was great, but they still finished second and I’m sure City will be looking to improve.

“For Liverpool to keep up, they need to make purchases as well. They have to go up another level because of the way City play. They got 97 points, lost one game all season and came second. That’s just incredible and it’s why I’m delighted they won the Champions League. To have won nothing would have been unbelievable.”

The Reds have so far remained quiet in the transfer window with PEC Zwolle graduate Sepp van den Berg being the only player purchased. On the contrary, the same has been the case with the Citizens but it is quite evident that the Mancunian giants are aiming to strengthen the squad with Rodri and Harry Maguire eyed from Atletico Madrid and Leicester City respectively.

As such, Jurgen Klopp’s side cannot afford to rest on their laurels for the summer and it remains to be seen whether the club make any marquee signing during the remaining five-and-a-half weeks of the transfer window. The Reds start off the new Premier League campaign with a home game against newly-promoted Norwich City.
