Bale joined Spurs from Real Madrid last summer on a season-long loan with an option to buy, but it continues to look highly unlikely that the London club will exercise the purchase option at the end of the season. Mourinho was the manager who engineered the winger’s transfer to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium in the summer as he looked to add some more firepower to an attack that already had Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son in it.

Phil Thompson believes Timo Werner would ideally suit Liverpool

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson believes the Reds need competition for places and they should land the services of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig. Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has constantly depended on Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, and Roberto Firmino in the frontline but Thompson feels the club need competition for places similar to Manchester City.

He told Sky Sports: “I think he’ll give a realistic challenge to the front three. Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino – they look as though they’re set. We do have Divock Origi but I think everybody realises that he’s more of an impact player, for sort of the last 15, 20 minutes – but that’s not really good enough. We do need somebody a little bit better. Some people will say ‘Will Werner get in and will he want to come to Liverpool?’. I think he would and I think he does. You look at Manchester City, they’ve got two top class players in every position. That is what Liverpool need and I think Werner would help to give us that.”
